For their third matchday of the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season, AS Monaco hosted RC Lens at the Stade Louis II, and suffered a big loss to their visitors in front of the home crowd.

The match began in an unfavourable manner for the Monegasques as Lens’ Loïs Openda opened the scoring at only the seventh minute, and by the 38th minute, Deiver Machado had doubled the visitors’ lead.

Just minutes after the second blow was dealt to the hosts, central defender Benoit Badiashile managed to get on the scoresheet with a goal of his own to bring the scoreline to a less painful 1-2 at the 41st minute, just before the first half could conclude.

However, a successfully converted Seko Fofana penalty at the 55th minute brought a victory against Lens even further out of reach. With a scoreline of 1-3, Monaco then lost Vanderson to a red card at the 72nd minute, and would have to play the remainder of the match with just 10 men again.

Without mercy for the supporters in the Principality’s famed Stade, Wesley Saïd scored the fourth and final goal of the fixture at the 78th minute, bringing the score to a less than savoury 1-4 to Lens.

After a match to forget, Monaco must now prepare to face tougher opponents in the form of Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes in Paris on Sunday, August 28.
