Residents across the Côte d’Azur experienced mild tremors late on Monday, December 16, when an earthquake struck at 22:22. The quake, with its epicentre located off the Mediterranean coast near Monaco, registered a magnitude of 3.7 on the Richter scale, according to the Seismological Bureau. The tremors were felt in several cities, including Monaco, Nice, Menton, and as far as Antibes.
Though no damage has been reported, the incident has served as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity. This earthquake follows another just days earlier, a magnitude 4.3 quake with an epicentre in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, continuing a series of tremors that have unsettled residents and authorities alike.
Experts warn that the Côte d’Azur faces an inevitable major earthquake and subsequent tsunami, though predicting exactly when such a catastrophe might occur remains impossible.
