In response to two severe traffic accidents in the Principality over the weekend, the Monegasque government has unveiled a series of decisive measures aimed at tackling drink driving.
Speaking at a press conference flanked by senior officials, including Samuel Vuelta Simon, Director of Judicial Services, Minister of State Didier Guillaume condemned the reckless behaviour that led to the incidents. “Monaco cannot be a playground for thrill-seeking drunk drivers,” he declared. “Monaco is a place of celebration and joy, but if you choose to drink, you must not drive. We will be uncompromising.”
The government announced an immediate escalation in road safety measures. Intensified police checks will target drink-driving offenses, particularly during the festive season. A new bill is set to be introduced in January, 2025 that will authorise random roadside checks and impose stricter penalties and fines on offenders.
A public awareness campaign is being prepared to highlight the dangers of drink-driving, aiming to change attitudes and prevent future tragedies. Additionally, fixed speed radars and monitoring devices will soon be installed in tunnels, areas that have proven to be high-risk zones for accidents.
Nightlife establishments and taxi services are also being enlisted in the campaign. Representatives from these sectors are scheduled to meet with government officials to collaborate on actionable steps to ensure safer nights in Monaco.
