The Municipality of Monaco has issued a warning to users following the discovery of fraudulent activity involving surface parking meters in the Principality.
The fraud affected 40 of the 86 parking meters installed throughout Monaco. Fraudsters placed stickers featuring a fake QR code on the machines, which directed users to malicious websites when scanned, encouraging them to make payment. This type of scam has been observed outside of Monaco as well.
Municipal authorities have since inspected all parking meters in Monaco, and the fraudulent stickers have been removed. The official payment methods for parking remain via PayByPhone or Monapass apps, cash, credit card, or contactless payment. None of Monaco’s parking meters are equipped with QR codes.
The Municipality urges anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to this scam to contact the Public Safety Directorate. A formal complaint will be filed by the Municipality.
