AS Monaco will officially start the upcoming season with a prestigious match in the Chinese capital of Beijing. On August 8, coach Adi Hütter’s team will play for the Trophée des Champions against Paris Saint-Germain, the 2023/24 French championship winning team.

While the championship winner normally plays against the national cup winner, Monaco is eligible for this game because of its second place standing in the league, as PSG is not only champion but also cup winner this year.

The Principality side has played for this award seven times in its one hundred year-long history, and won it on four occasions; in 1961, 1985, 1997 and 2000. The last time Monaco played for this award was in 2018, in Shenzhen, wherein they lost 4-0 to PSG.

the most memorable victory was perhaps that of 1997, when Nice was defeated in the final by 5-2 in Béziers. It was the only time the Monegasques didn’t need penalties to claim this trophy.
