A senior policeman in Monaco died in a tragic accident while on his way to work on Tuesday morning. The officer was named as Commander Christophe David, head of the Secretariat of Public Security.

The incident took place at about 09:00 on the Moyenne Corniche between Villefranche and Eze. The officer was hit by a car travelling in the opposite direction, and it is believed at this early stage that the car had wandered over the line in the centre of the road. The driver of the car did not possess a licence.

The tragedy follows the death of two Monaco firefighters on motorbikes earlier this month in similar circumstances.

Commander David died on the scene. The driver and the rider of a scooter who was following Commander David were both taken to hospital.

The Monaco Government issued a statement later on Tuesday: ‘This tragic death in a traffic accident on the way to work once again plunges the Public Security and the entire Monegasque community into deep sadness. The Prince’s Government offers its sincere condolences to the family and relatives of Commander Christophe David, as well as to all police officers. May they be assured of the full solidarity of the Prince’s Government in these painful times.”
