The Société des Bains de Mer has initiated disciplinary proceedings against several employees at Le Grill restaurant in the Hôtel de Paris following an internal investigation into repeated incidents of alcohol consumption during working hours using products belonging to the establishment.

According to SBM, the incidents occurred over a period of several weeks and involved employees consuming alcohol on the premises while on duty. The alcohol concerned came from the restaurant’s own stock, raising additional concerns over the handling and use of company property.

The company said it conducted an in-depth internal investigation, gathering evidence that it described as verified, consistent and factual. Its findings identified repeated conduct that breached internal workplace regulations and rules governing company property, while also raising questions about the employer’s responsibility for maintaining safety at work.

SBM stressed that disciplinary proceedings were being considered on an individual basis and that any resulting sanctions would reflect the seriousness of the conduct established in each case. All employees concerned were invited to meetings to explain their actions and were offered the opportunity to receive assistance during the process.

The case has also prompted disagreement over claims of anti-union retaliation. In a statement, SBM rejected allegations of union repression contained in a leaflet displayed at the Hôtel de Paris by the Union of Trade Unions of Monaco. The company argued that the proceedings stemmed from the findings of its internal investigation rather than the union responsibilities of the employees concerned.

SBM maintained that holding a staff representative or trade union position does not exempt an employee from complying with workplace rules, including those governing alcohol consumption and company property.

The company reiterated its recognition of trade unions and its willingness to engage in dialogue, while reaffirming its respect for the rights to strike and demonstrate. It insisted that workplace safety and the consistent application of rules must apply equally to all employees.

SBM added that it was taking the necessary steps to maintain normal operations and preserve the quality of service at Le Grill while the disciplinary process continues.
