The Monaco Audiovisual Institute will screen a restored version of Black Rain, the acclaimed Japanese drama examining the devastating consequences of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, at the Théâtre des Variétés on Tuesday, October 27, at 7pm…

Directed by Shōhei Imamura and released in 1989, the black-and-white film follows a young woman and her family as they struggle with the physical and emotional aftermath of the bombing on August 6, 1945.

Beginning with the explosion and the radioactive black rain that followed, the film offers an unflinching portrayal of the destruction before turning its attention to the survivors and their attempts to rebuild their lives.

Winner of the Special Jury Prize and Technical Grand Prize at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, Black Rain remains a powerful examination of war, suffering and the enduring impact of nuclear catastrophe.

The screening is organised in partnership with Monaco’s Embassy in Japan to mark the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, celebrating their cultural connections through cinema.
