The alarm was raised after a significant crack was discovered in a structural element within the building’s basement. Initial reports indicate a movement of around 1.5 to 2 centimetres was observed in a basement wall, following the apparent weakening of a load-bearing column. From an engineering standpoint, this distinction matters: a 1.5 to 2 centimetre movement in a basement wall is not the same as saying the building itself has moved by that amount.
The wall displacement is, at this stage, an observation, one that could potentially reflect a larger structural movement, but which engineers have yet to confirm either way. Authorities have secured the surrounding area and established a safety perimeter while specialists continue their assessment.
The precautionary evacuation involved all 14 residents, who were asked to leave the property while an urgent inspection was carried out. His Serene Highness Prince Albert II attended the scene to be briefed on the situation by officials, according to local sources.
Completed in 2016, La Petite Afrique occupies a prominent position on Avenue de la Madone overlooking Place du Casino. The exclusive development comprises eight luxury apartments above four underground parking levels.
Monaco’s Fire Brigade remained on site throughout the operation, although no injuries were reported and an ambulance dispatched as part of the initial response was ultimately not required.
The authorities have not yet confirmed the precise cause of the structural issue, and expert assessments remain ongoing. The building will remain evacuated until engineers determine it is safe for residents to return.
