The ninth edition of the Monaco Ocean Protection Challenge concluded at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco on Thursday, June 11, with four projects recognised for their innovative contributions to ocean conservation and sustainable marine development.

The international competition, which encourages students and young entrepreneurs to create solutions addressing environmental challenges facing the world’s oceans, attracted its largest participation to date, highlighting the growing global interest in the blue economy and marine sustainability.

Organised jointly by the International University of Monaco, the Oceanographic Institute – Prince Albert I of Monaco Foundation, Monaco Impact and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the challenge aims to transform promising ideas into viable ventures capable of protecting marine ecosystems while promoting responsible use of ocean resources.

This year’s edition drew 215 submissions from 67 universities and higher education institutions across 58 countries, representing a substantial increase compared with the previous edition. Participants spent several months developing business strategies and entrepreneurial concepts focused on advancing ocean sustainability.

An international panel of experts, including marine specialists, investors, entrepreneurs and representatives from innovation incubators, evaluated the proposals through a multi-stage selection process. Ten finalist teams were ultimately invited to Monaco to present their projects before a distinguished jury.

Finalists competed in both the Business Concepts and Startups categories, alongside recipients of special awards recognising initiatives with strong regional impact and innovation potential.

The final presentations brought together young innovators from 14 different nationalities, reflecting the truly global nature of the competition. Participants travelled from countries spanning Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East to showcase their solutions at the Principality’s renowned Oceanographic Museum.

Beyond awarding prizes, the Monaco Ocean Protection Challenge continues to provide long-term support to participants by helping them connect with investors, mentors and industry leaders. Several former winners have already benefited from opportunities created through Monaco’s growing blue economy network, including participation in major international forums dedicated to sustainable ocean development and marine finance.

As Monaco continues to position itself as a global hub for ocean conservation and environmental innovation, organisers say the challenge remains a key platform for identifying and supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs working to protect the world’s oceans.
