Valentin Vacherot produced a hard-fought victory at the Swiss Indoors Basel on Thursday, October 29, defeating Spain’s Rafael Jódar in three sets to book his place in the quarter-finals after more than two and a half hours on court.

The Monégasque prevailed 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 against the tournament’s third seed, who arrived in Basel in strong form after finishing runner-up in Shanghai. Two tie-breaks ultimately separated the players in a closely contested encounter.

Vacherot took the opening set in a tie-break before Jódar responded emphatically in the second, levelling the match with a 6-2 win. The deciding set proved equally tight, but the Monégasque held his nerve to secure another tie-break victory and complete the upset.

The result sends Vacherot into the last eight, where he will face Denmark’s Holger Rune. Rune booked his own quarter-final place with a victory over Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz on Wednesday.

Vacherot will now look to carry his momentum into the next round as his Basel campaign continues.
