AS Monaco’s winning run came to a cruel end on the evening of Saturday, April 5, as they were beaten 2-1 by Stade Brestois at the very death. Despite levelling the score through a Denis Zakaria penalty in the second half, the Red and Whites conceded a long-range stunner from Mahdi Camara deep into added time at the Stade Francis-Le Blé.
Coming into the match on the back of three wins and a draw, Adi Hütter’s side looked to build momentum and tighten their grip on second place in Ligue 1. Fielding the same starting eleven that triumphed over Nice, the Monegasques started brightly, with Mika Biereth forcing an early save. But it was Brest who struck first, Abdallah Sima pouncing on a rebound to make it 1-0 just before the break.
Hütter rang the changes at half-time, bringing on Eliesse Ben Seghir and Vanderson to inject some energy. The equaliser came shortly after, when Breel Embolo earned a penalty following a VAR review. Zakaria coolly slotted it home in the 63rd minute — his third goal against Brest, more than any other side in Ligue 1.
Monaco pushed for a winner, with chances falling to Embolo, Akliouche and Ben Seghir, but Brest’s defence and keeper Marco Bizot stood firm. Then, heartbreak. With virtually the last kick of the match, Mahdi Camara unleashed a thunderbolt from distance that beat Philipp Köhn in the 94th minute.
A tough blow for Monaco, who must now regroup ahead of a massive clash with Marseille at the Stade Louis-II on Saturday, April 12.
