Mike James, who joined Monaco’s basketball team in 2021, has consistently proven himself as one of Europe’s top basketball talents. His standout performances played a pivotal role in Monaco’s retention of their French league title in June, where James was named Finals MVP. Known for his exceptional scoring ability, particularly his signature step-back shots, James also shone on the European stage, earning the title of best player of the EuroLeague regular season. Under the leadership of new coach Vassilis Spanoulis, James has further evolved his game, becoming an even more dynamic playmaker. Averaging 7.1 assists per game in the EuroLeague this season, up from 4.5 under previous coach Sasa Obradovic, the 34-year-old Portland native has been instrumental in Monaco’s success. His on-court partnership with rising star Elie Okobo has added an extra dimension to the team’s offensive prowess.
James’ recognition as Côte d’Azur Sportsman of the Year caps a banner year for the player and solidifies his status as a cornerstone of Monaco’s ambitions. With this latest accolade, the man known as “MJ” adds another prestigious trophy to his growing collection, reflecting not only his individual brilliance but also the collective achievements of his team.
