His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco recently joined the National Geographic Pristine Seas team in the Solomon Islands to support their mission of protecting the planet’s last remaining pristine marine ecosystems…
Led by marine biologist and explorer Enric Sala, the program, launched in 2008, aims to explore and conserve untouched marine regions to ensure resilient and thriving ecosystems for future generations.
The Solomon Islands, located in the heart of the Coral Triangle, are renowned for their extraordinary marine biodiversity. However, these fragile ecosystems face increasing threats from human activities and the impacts of climate change.
During the expedition, Prince Albert II participated in a bathyscaphe dive alongside renowned free diver Pierre Frolla. Engaging in discussions with Enric Sala and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, a passionate advocate for ocean conservation, the Sovereign Prince highlighted his unwavering commitment to marine preservation, a cornerstone of his work through the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
The Prince emphasised the critical role of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as one of the most effective tools to safeguard ocean biodiversity. He called for greater international cooperation to expand and strengthen these protected areas, including those in regions beyond national jurisdiction, which are vital for sustaining the planet’s health.
This visit underscores Monaco’s leadership in marine conservation and global advocacy for inclusive ocean protection. By uniting scientific expertise and global awareness, initiatives like Pristine Seas continue to inspire action for the preservation of our shared marine heritage.
