The Monaco population census, first conducted in 1757, provides vital insights into the Principality’s demographics and housing. While historically performed every 8-10 years through traditional surveys, Monaco transitioned to a modern “register-based” method in 2023, leveraging digital administrative records for efficiency and accuracy. This approach reduces costs and allows for annual updates on population and housing data, a significant improvement from the previous decade-long gaps. The shift, validated by Monaco’s Scientific Council and government, marks a milestone in statistical methodology, with the first results now available.
Key Findings of the 2023 Census
As of December 31, 2023, Monaco’s population reached 38,367 residents, marking a 2.8% increase since the last census in 2016. This growth translates to over 1,000 new residents in seven years, continuing a long-term trend where the population has nearly doubled since 1951.
Monaco’s compact territory reflects a staggering population density of 18,445.7 residents per km², among the highest globally.
The population comprises 50.8% women (19,475) and 49.2% men (18,892), showcasing a steady move towards gender parity. However, the age profile reveals an older demographic, with the average resident now aged 47.1 years, up from 46.4 in 2016. Residents aged 45 to 64 represent a significant portion of the population.
Diverse and Cosmopolitan Community
Monaco’s population includes 141 nationalities, with Monegasques now forming the largest group (23.9%, 9,179 people) for the first time in history, followed by French (8,473), Italians (7,515), and British (2,870). Interestingly, over 5,000 non-Monegasque adults have settled in Monaco since the 2016 census.
Employment and Housing
More than one-third of residents aged 18-64 are employed in Monaco, contributing to the vibrant economy. In total, over 21,000 housing units were recorded, reflecting the Principality’s ongoing commitment to residential development.
Monaco’s 2023 census underscores its status as a thriving, multicultural hub, blending tradition with innovation in its approach to understanding and serving its population.
