A tragic accident claimed the life of 21-year-old Loïc Keita, a young player from Stade Olympique Millavois, on his way to a match against AS Monaco Rugby. Keita, a father to a young child, was en route to join his team in Monaco when the fatal road accident occurred on Saturday, October 26.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Millau Rugby Club announced the devastating news, sending condolences to Keita’s family and loved ones. Club president Laurent Tabutin voiced sorrow and frustration in a comment, noting that adverse weather, including storms and heavy rain, had raised concerns over the trip’s safety. “Many thought our journey would be postponed, but unfortunately, this was never considered,” Tabutin remarked, emphasising that the team’s worst fears became a tragic reality when Keita’s silence raised alarms. The president expressed sorrow for Keita’s family and the young baby he had recently welcomed, calling on French rugby authorities to reassess travel decisions in challenging conditions.

Centre Presse Aveyron reported that Keita, who played as a right prop, was set to compete with the reserve team. The Monaco club, understanding the gravity of the situation, allowed Millau to decide whether to proceed with the game. Despite the tragedy, the team chose to honour their commitment and played the match in memory of their teammate.
