AS Monaco hosted FC Nantes at the Stade Louis II for their opening match of the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season on Friday, August 6. The occasion was made all the more special as fans were finally able to return to the stands of the Stade Louis II, after a 10 month-long wait.

Summer signings Jean Lucas and Myron Boadu both played in red and white for the first time on the evening, The Monegasques enjoyed a dominant start to the match, and in the 15th minute Gelson Martins opened the scoring.

However, it didn’t take long for the visitors to respond, with Jean-Charles Castelletto bringing the scoreline to 1-1 in short order. Despite the fact that the hosts continued to dominate for the rest of the game, that’s how it stayed.

“Of course we’re disappointed,” manager Kovac. “We were hoping for a win, but we were up against a team who scored with their only chance. We weren’t rewarded for our dominance but that’s football. We’re a little disappointed but we move forward.”

It was the first time in nine years that Nantes had come away from Monaco with a draw.
