A customer of Monaco’s Sass Cafe drank so much that he fell under a table, Monaco’s Criminal Court heard this week.

However, drunkenness was not the offence for which he was sanctioned, but a tirade of abuse directed at the Sovereign Prince at the Princess Grace Hospital, where he had been taken by the police to help him sober up.

The 30 year-old defendant later claimed that he had no memory of the incident. President of the Court Jérôme Fougeras Lavergnolle pointed out that while the accused had no previous criminal record in Monaco, in France he had been charged 21 times with a wide range of offences.

The prosecutor asked for a 15-day jail sentence, but the court decided to impose a fine of 800 euros.
