A devastating road accident in the early hours of Sunday, May 11 has shaken the AS Monaco basketball community, claiming the life of a 17-year-old player and leaving another seriously injured, Monaco-Matin reports.

The crash occurred shortly after 3:00 in the morning on the A8 motorway near Le Cannet-des-Maures, as a minibus carrying members of AS Monaco’s National 3 basketball squad returned from an away fixture against Terres Froides. According to Monaco-Matin, the young victim, described as a rising talent from ASM’s training centre, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A 24-year-old teammate was airlifted in critical condition to Sainte-Anne Hospital in Toulon, while four others sustained less severe injuries.

The young man had been enrolled in a dedicated sporting curriculum at Lycée Albert Ier in Monaco and was widely regarded as one of the academy’s brightest prospects.

AS Monaco Basketball expressed deep sorrow in a statement released on Sunday morning: “In these tragic circumstances, the president and members of the club wish to offer their most sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and his loved ones and stand alongside the injured.”

A minute of silence will be held at the Salle Gaston Médecin ahead of Sunday evening’s BetClic Elite match between AS Monaco’s Roca Team and Bourg-en-Bresse, as the Principality’s sporting world mourns the loss of one of its own.
