National Council member Balthazar Seydoux has called for “a shock campaign” to deal with the problem of drunk-driving in Monaco, but at this stage it isn’t clear how the Government will respond to this message.
Mr Seydoux’s alarm call followed the deaths two weeks ago of two young female students at the International University of Monaco, one from Azerbaijan and the second from Kazakhstan. The victims were travelling with two other passengers in a car being driven by a male student who was reported to be well over the drink-driving limit when his speeding Audi hit the walls of the Millennium Tunnel heading towards Cap d’Ail shortly before 05:00 on Sunday morning, December 17.
The group had been drinking at a well-known Monaco nightspot and were on their way to buy cigarettes at the Esso station before going on to see a friend.
As reported by NEWS.MC, one of the victims died at the scene and the other one day later in hospital.
Similarly, the three young men who died when the SUV they were travelling in at great speed hit a concrete barrier in the Louis II Tunnel under the Fairmont had been celebrating at another Monaco nightclub.
