Pilates is enjoying something of a moment in Monaco, with social media helping a century-old exercise method find an enthusiastic new generation of followers…

Promising improved posture, greater flexibility and strength, as well as potential benefits for stress and back discomfort, the discipline has become an increasingly familiar sight on Instagram. Videos of carefully controlled exercises, often performed using specialist reformer machines, have encouraged many curious newcomers to try it for themselves.

Instructors are keen to emphasise that Pilates is far more than a social media trend and when incorporated into a regular routine can have benefits that reach far beyond the studio. Pilates is an established practice that needs very little space or equipment in its purest form. Classes can be adapted to different ages and abilities, with participants ranging from young adults and new mothers to older people and athletes incorporating Pilates into their wider training.

Monaco has certainly embraced the boom. Around a dozen dedicated studios have now opened across the Principality, whilst one new studio, launched earlier this year, has already attracted more than 220 members.

A one-hour group session typically costs around €50, while individual tuition can reach approximately €90.

Whilst those effortless-looking Instagram videos might suggest otherwise, Pilates requires considerable concentration and muscular effort. Behind the polished social media aesthetic lies a demanding workout that appears to be winning plenty of converts.

A century after he developed the method, Joseph Pilates would surely be delighted to see his approach enjoying such a remarkable new lease of life.
