Monaco’s urban landscape continues to evolve with the arrival and installation of the new Fontvieille footbridge, a striking 35-metre-long structure weighing 90 tonnes…
Transported in three sections via a specially organised exceptional convoy, the massive footbridge was assembled and lifted into place in a major overnight operation that drew the attention of many onlookers.
Positioned at the Îlot Pasteur and in line with the existing Würtemberg footbridge, the new structure is designed to improve pedestrian and cyclist access between the Salines car park and the western entrance to Monaco, including the Fontvieille and Condamine districts. The installation was a feat of engineering precision, requiring a 350-tonne crane and a 70-tonne rolling truck to manoeuvre the steel components safely into position.
The bridge was slung, balanced, and carefully placed atop prepared scaffolding, with around 15 workers coordinating the delicate operation throughout the night. Although the main span is now in place, additional work remains. The elevators serving the bridge and linking to Fontvieille are expected to be operational by September, while the stair access will be completed by the end of the year.
This project is part of the Principality’s ongoing commitment to promote sustainable mobility, encouraging residents and visitors to prioritise walking and cycling as convenient and eco-friendly modes of transport. The Fontvieille footbridge is set to become a key link in Monaco’s growing network of pedestrian infrastructure, providing both practicality and architectural presence in one of the most densely populated urban areas in the world.
