The Monaco Academy of the Sea, A2M, has taken an important step forward by holding its first training session abroad, hosted at Menara University in Marrakech…

Over three days, students from disciplines including international law, political science, and economics gathered to explore a comprehensive 360° perspective on the oceans—an area covering over 70% of the Earth’s surface.

Organised with the support of the Francophone University Agency, the session featured a diverse range of expert speakers, many of whom also contribute to the Academy’s annual summer session in Monaco. This pilot international edition offered a condensed yet impactful model of the Academy’s signature programme, tailored for a new audience. Delivered entirely in French, the initiative was particularly appreciated by students from French-speaking countries, offering rare access to multidisciplinary training in their native language.

The training addressed current global challenges related to the marine environment, with a particular emphasis on themes shared by Monaco and Morocco in their public policies. Moroccan commitment to maritime development was also showcased, notably through a presentation by Professor Mohamed Amine Balombo on the Atlantic Initiative of King Mohammed VI—a strategic South-South cooperation model designed to convert maritime challenges into opportunities for African nations, especially those in the Sahel.

The session culminated in the signing of a partnership between the Monaco Academy of the Sea, led by President Laurent Anselmi, and Menara University, reinforcing future cooperation. By expanding beyond the borders of the Principality, the Academy is broadening its educational impact and helping shape the next generation of ocean advocates.
