From 2 April 2025, a significant change will come into effect for Monegasque travellers heading to the United Kingdom. Anyone wishing to enter the UK for a short stay, whether for tourism, business travel, or transit, will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure. This digital document is now a mandatory requirement for citizens of several visa-exempt countries, including Monaco, as part of the UK’s efforts to strengthen border control without imposing full visa restrictions.
The application process for the ETA will open on 5 March 2025, allowing travellers to prepare ahead of the April deadline. The requirement will apply to all Monegasque nationals, including infants and children, for whom parents must submit applications. However, those who already hold a visa, a UK residence permit, or are planning a stay exceeding six months on a student or work visa will not need to apply.
Applications must be submitted online via an official portal or a dedicated mobile app, requiring personal details and passport information. While the process is expected to be swift, authorities advise applying several days in advance to avoid any last-minute complications. Once granted, the ETA will cost £10 and remain valid for two years, unless a new passport is issued, in which case a fresh application will be necessary.
This new measure is part of a broader overhaul of the UK’s border control system. Monegasque travellers must now factor in this requirement when planning their trips to Britain, as failure to obtain an ETA could result in denied boarding. It is strongly recommended to check the latest updates on the UK government’s official website before making travel arrangements.
