As part of Monaco’s ongoing energy transition, the Princely Government is prioritising energy efficiency initiatives. The Department of Urban Development (DAU), under the Ministry of Equipment, Environment, and Urban Planning, is leading efforts to modernise public lighting across the Principality, focusing on sustainability and reducing energy consumption.
Since 2021, Monaco has been replacing fluorescent and sodium lamps in its tunnels with energy-efficient LED lighting. These LED systems are significantly more durable, with lifespans extending from 80,000 to 100,000 hours far surpassing the outdated fixtures. This upgrade not only reduces energy consumption but also minimises the need for maintenance, resulting in fewer tunnel closures and a substantial decrease in waste. LED replacements are required only once every decade, further enhancing sustainability.
Following the successful completion of upgrades in the Sainte-Dévote, Débarcadère, and Digue tunnels, the DAU is moving forward with the modernisation of lighting across all tunnels on the Dorsale. To facilitate this work, tunnels will undergo successive nighttime closures between 21:30 and 6:00. Phase one, taking place from January 6 to February 5, will see closures in the Rocher Nice under the Rocher, Rocher, and Canton tunnels. Phase two, from February 10 to February 28, will affect the Colle, Dorsale, Hélios, Fontvieille descent, and Rocher Nice under the Rocher tunnels. Phase three, scheduled from June 16 to August 4, will include the Dorsale, Canton (T2ter), and Larvotto tunnels.
The DAU’s commitment to upgrading infrastructure aligns with Monaco’s broader environmental goals, reinforcing the Principality’s leadership in sustainable urban development.
