Wilfried Singo has cemented his place as one of French football’s brightest talents, earning a well-deserved spot in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year 2024, selected by journalists from L’Equipe. The central defender has been a rock at the back for AS Monaco and a valuable asset in attacking set pieces, delivering a string of exceptional performances throughout the year.
Singo’s standout year began on the international stage, where he helped Ivory Coast win the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil. He played in all seven matches of the tournament, including the final against Nigeria, where his contribution in the last 20 minutes secured a historic victory for his country.
Returning to Monaco, Singo delivered a masterclass performance against Paris Saint-Germain. He was unbeatable in defence, winning 88 percent of his duels (15 out of 17) and recovering 10 balls. A moment of magic during the match—a stunning sombrero over Bradley Barcola—went viral on social media, showcasing his skill and composure under pressure.
Singo’s talents extended to the Champions League, where he scored a jaw-dropping goal against Red Star Belgrade, launching a 35-meter missile into the top corner. His defensive consistency and attacking flair were critical in Monaco’s successful season, which saw the team finish second in Ligue 1 and secure a return to Europe’s premier competition.
Nicknamed “SinGOAT” by fans, Singo also found the net in Ligue 1 against Toulouse and was a dominant force in Monaco’s defense. With 47 interceptions in 2024, the 24-year-old has proven himself as one of the league’s top defenders. His inclusion in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year alongside stars like Marquinhos, Ousmane Dembélé, and Kylian Mbappé highlights his extraordinary impact. Notably, he is the first Monaco central defender to receive this honour since Kamil Glik in 2017.
