On Sunday, October 13, Prince Albert II of Monaco travelled to Palermo to attend the meeting of the International Commission for Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea (CIESM)…

Hosted at the historic Palazzo Chiaramonte-Steri by the Rector of the University of Palermo, Professor Massimo Midiri, Prince Albert was accompanied by Monaco’s Ambassador to Italy, Anne Eastwood, CIESM Director Laura Giugliano, and Monaco’s National Delegate Tidiani Couma.

During the meeting, which Prince Albert presided over, members discussed CIESM’s recent scientific endeavours and explored new avenues for collaboration on Mediterranean maritime issues. As an organization focused on scientific exploration, CIESM aims to enhance cooperation in protecting the Mediterranean’s marine environment. Strengthening these efforts remains a priority for Prince Albert, who has long championed environmental causes.

After the meeting, the Prince and his delegation visited the Palazzo Steri, a significant monument of Sicilian history. Built in the 14th century, this palace is a prime example of Catalan Gothic architecture and has played a central role in the region’s history, particularly during the periods of the Inquisition and medieval dominance in Sicily. The visit underscored the strong ties between Monaco and Italy, particularly in their shared commitment to environmental and cultural preservation.
