As a member of the European Council since 2004, Monaco is one of the 46 member countries which will participate in next June’s election of the new Secretary General of this international organisation.
The latter will be elected by vote of the members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), where two votes from Monegasque representatives will be counted in the result of the ballot.
Listening to the commitments of Didier Reynders and the interest he has for Monegasque institutions, and for the specificities of small states like Monaco, National Council President Thomas Brezzo and elected officials thanked him for his visit and assured that they will consider his application sympathetically.
Without prejudging other candidates, the election of this renowned diplomat, a former Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs in Belgium and President of the Committee of Ministers, as well as the European Commissioner for Justice since 2019, would allow Monaco to strengthen its links with the council of Europe, and would offer new opportunities for cooperation.
