Four Beausoleil residents have been sentenced at a court in Nice for using public funds in Monaco to pay for a birthday party and to celebrate the acquittal of Mayor of Beausoleil Gérard Spinelli in the so-called Odéon Tower affair.
The birthday meal cost 4,812 euros, the court was told, while the two acquittal celebration meals set the Beausoleil taxpayer back by 1,428 euros, French daily Nice Matin reported.
The four accused, including three municipal officials, all pleaded guilty, which means that there will be no public criminal trial.
Appearing before a single judge, the three officials received suspended prison sentences of between four and six months, as well as fines of 500 to 5,000 euros. The fourth defendant, the president of a civil association, was given a fine of 1,000 euros, suspended.
