Monaco’s health authorities are offering free vaccinations against HPV, papillomavirus, for all 11-14 year-olds in the Principality.

Minister of Health and Social Affairs Christophe Robino said: “This is the period during which we can contract these acute infections. Most are benign but certain sub-variants of the virus have long-term carcinogenic potential. We know that the vast majority of cervical cancers in women are linked to this chronic infection.”

A single dose of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is enough to protect against cervical cancer, a World Health Organisation group of experts has said.

Inoculation is also available to the age of 19, and in specific circumstances for older women.

Publicity for the campaign will be provided by Fight Aids Monaco and the Monaco Red Cross.
