AS Monaco forward Breel Embolo has suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in training and will therefore be out of action for several months, the club announced.

Due to the severity of his injury, Embolo could miss out on most of the upcoming 2023/24 season of Ligue 1 football while he undergoes a lengthy recovery process. The Swiss international’s participation in the 2024 UEFA European Championship may also be in doubt.

Embolo has been an important component of the Principality side since signing in the 2022 summer transfer window, having made regular appearances on the scoresheet in one season, and often from the bench. With 14 goals and four assists in 42 matches for Monaco, Embolo’s contribution to the team will be missed while he recovers.

With Wissam Ben Yedder and Kevin Volland both entering the last years of their contracts, and now a sidelined star substitute, Monaco are looking to enhance their attacking arsenal.
