Former Rolex Masters winner Stan Wawrinka has survived the first round of this year’s event, while former Wimbledon-winner Andy Murray crashed out on the first day of the major tournament. The Swiss champion had a good comeback against the Dutch rising star Tallon Griekspoor after losing the first set (5-7). In the following sets he used all three opportunities to break the service of his opponent: 6-3, 6-4. Wawrinka will play on Wednesday in the next round against the American Taylor Fritz.

Another Dutch participant, Botic van de Zandschulp, had a win over the Hungarian qualifier Marlon Fucsovics after being down 6-3 and 3-0. He did win the second set on a tie-break (7-2) and finished the match with 6-1 in the third set. Van de Zandschulp will now play the Norwegian Casper Ruud.

The tournament of Andy Murray was a short story because he lost in two sets to the Australian Alex de Minaur (6-3, 6-1), who will meet in the next round the German Jan-Lennard Struff. The other British participants had mixed results at the start of the main tournament. Cameron Norrie was beaten in two sets by the Argentine Francisco Cerundolo (6-3, 6-4), while Jack Draper beat Sebastian Baez, also from Argentina, in two sets (6-3, 7-5). Draper will now play versus Hurkacz from Poland, who beat on Sunday the Serbian Djere in three sets; all finished in a tie-break (6-7, 7-6, 7-6).

French veteran Richard Gasquet, who played the semifinals of this event in 2005, couldn’t make it against Dominic Thiem and lost in two sets (6-1, 6-4). The Austrian, who played twice in the final of Roland Garros, will meet Holger Rune in the next round. Matteo Berrettini made a good impression for many enthusiastic compatriots against the American Maxime Cressy. The Wimbledon-finalist of 2021 won in two sets: 6-4, 6-2. He will play the Argentine Cerundolo on Wednesday in the next round. On the same day Novak Djokovic (v Ivan Gakhov, RUS), Stefanos Tsitsipas (v Benjamin Bonzi, FRA), Jannik Sinner (v Diego Schwartzman, ARG) and Daniil Medvedev will make their start at the tournament. Tomorrow Alexander Zverev will make his return on a clay court when he meets Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan.
