AS Monaco have kicked off their 2022/2023 Ligue 1 season in delightful fashion, as the Monegasques beat RC Strasbourg away at the Stade de la Meinau, on the afternoon of Saturday, August 6.

The first fixture of the season saw Monaco’s summer signing Breel Embolo start as the sole striker upfront in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Gelson Martins, Sofiane Diop and Krepin Diatta just behind.

It would be Diatta who would score the first goal of the game, and the season, just before the first half could conclude. The attacking midfielder made it 0-1 for Monaco at the 43rd minute, thanks to an assist from central defender Axel Disasi.

Not content with such a slim lead, Philippe Clement’s men doubled down shortly after the second half kicked off. This time it was Diop with the winning strike, bringing the scoreline to 0-2 at the 53rd minute.

The visiting Monegasques were now able to enjoy a more comfortable lead, but not for long, as Habib Diallo made it 1-2 for Strasbourg at the 65th minute.

A flurry of substitutions ensued over the remaining minutes of the match, but this did not impact the scoreline in the end, as Monaco held on for a 1-2 victory in their first match of the 2022/23 season.

Monaco’s next Ligue 1 fixture will be at home against Rennes on Saturday, August 13. However, Monaco will first face PSV Eindhoven away in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League qualifiers on Tuesday, August 9.
