Three doctors and the Monaco Cardio-Thoracic Centre appeared before the Principality’s Criminal Court on Tuesday, October 20, facing charges of involuntary manslaughter following the death of a 76-year-old patient in 2018…

As reported by Monaco-Matin, the patient, identified as Emmanuel D., was admitted on April 30 for an arteriography, having previously undergone treatment for cardiovascular problems. Although the initial procedure reportedly went well, complications developed later that day, requiring further surgery. He subsequently suffered a heart attack and died the following morning.

The case centres on whether shortcomings in the patient’s preparation, treatment and subsequent supervision contributed to his death. A court-appointed expert report concluded that failures in his care were directly linked to his death.

Defence lawyers challenged those findings, arguing that neither negligence nor a direct causal connection to the patient’s death had been sufficiently established.

Following nine hours of proceedings, the prosecutor requested the acquittal of one doctor, while seeking fines of €12,000 and €9,000 against the other two. A €50,000 fine was also requested against the medical centre.

Members of the patient’s family attended the hearing, eight years after his death.

The court will deliver its verdict on December 15.
