Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell has announced his engagement to long-term partner Carmen Montero Mundt, sharing the news over the weekend with a series of understated beachside photographs during F1’s summer break.
Russell kept the announcement simple, posting a joint Instagram photo captioned only with a ring emoji and a white heart. The images appeared to show the couple at an intimate, candlelit dinner by the sea, with Montero Mundt’s oval yellow diamond engagement ring, estimated by jewellery experts at eight to ten carats and worth more than $1 million, clearly visible in several of the shots. The post quickly drew a wave of reaction, amassing several hundred thousand likes within hours, along with congratulatory messages from across the paddock, including Russell’s Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly.
The proposal comes as little surprise to those who had been following the couple closely. Speaking to The Times ahead of this year’s Monaco Grand Prix in June, Russell had already hinted strongly at his intentions, saying Carmen brought him stability amid racing and offered him a way to switch off from the sport, adding that she was, without doubt, his future, and that marriage would come, if not immediately, then certainly within the next five years.
Russell and Montero Mundt have been together since 2020, having met in London through a mutual friend. Since then, she has become a familiar presence in the Formula 1 paddock, regularly seen trackside during race weekends, including Monaco, one of the sport’s most iconic stops and a fixture on the F1 calendar long associated with glamour both on and off the track. Spanish-born and raised, Montero Mundt moved to the UK at 18, studying business management and finance at the University of Westminster before building a career in the financial sector. Earlier this year, she expanded into entrepreneurship, launching skincare brand Barriers alongside co-founder Óscar Valls Bartolomé.
The engagement caps a landmark year for Russell both personally and professionally. On track, the Briton has claimed two Grand Prix victories so far this season, including the season-opener in Australia, as Mercedes continue to push for honours during F1’s ongoing 2026 campaign.
