Young wrestlers from across Europe gathered in the Principality this weekend for the third edition of the Monaco International Wrestling Tournament, held at the Espace Saint-Antoine in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd…
Organised by AS Monaco Lutte, the event welcomed more than 100 competitors aged between eight and 20, representing France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Moldova, Germany, Switzerland, Serbia and Monaco. The tournament highlighted Monaco’s growing reputation as an international meeting point for emerging wrestling talent and grassroots sport.
His Serene Highness Prince Albert II attended the competition alongside Cuban wrestling legend Mijaín López, widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in the history of the sport. The five-time Olympic champion travelled to Monaco to lead a masterclass for young wrestlers, sharing stories and advice from a remarkable career spanning more than three decades.
Speaking during the event, López described the opportunity to exchange with young athletes from different countries as both inspiring and important for the future of wrestling.
The tournament also marked a symbolic milestone for wrestling in Monaco, with organisers celebrating 20 years since the discipline was first established in the Principality. Club officials noted that membership has now surpassed 100 registered wrestlers, reflecting steady growth and increasing international visibility for the sport in Monaco.
