Opera opened its doors to a new generation in Monaco on Tuesday, February 10, as students from across the Principality were invited inside the Opéra Garnier to observe rehearsals of Claude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande.
The initiative offered young attendees a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creative process behind one of the most celebrated works of French lyrical repertoire. Conducted by Kazuki Yamada and staged under the artistic direction of Jean-Louis Grinda, the production brings together the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, soloists and technical teams in a large-scale collaboration.
During the rehearsal session, students were able to witness how music, staging and performance come together, gaining insight into the preparation required to bring Debussy’s five-act drama to life. From orchestral balance to vocal interpretation, the experience highlighted the precision and teamwork involved in mounting a major operatic production.
Composed in 1902, Pelléas et Mélisande remains a landmark of impressionist opera, known for its atmospheric score and psychological depth. The production will be performed at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo on February 22, 24, 26 and 28.
