As part of this year’s National Day festivities, Monaco honours the legendary Josephine Baker with a spectacular revue titled Welcome to Monte Carlo…

Taking place on Wednesday evening in the Salle des Princes at the Grimaldi Forum, the performance marks the 50th anniversary of Baker’s passing and promises to be a highlight of the cultural season.

Conceived and directed by David Livermore with musical direction by Yvan Cassar, the show blends opera, jazz, revue, and musical theatre to tell the extraordinary story of Josephine Baker, from her dazzling beginnings in 1925 to her final days in Monte Carlo. The performance follows a narrative flashback format, starting in 1975 and moving through the decades of Baker’s life, exploring her iconic dances, her fight against racism, her adoption of children from around the world, and her role in major events of the 20th century.

At the heart of the show is lead actress Rachelle Valérie, whose singing, dancing, and acting embody the spirit of Baker. She is joined by acclaimed opera star Pretty Yende, guesting for three special numbers, alongside a 50-piece orchestra and 20 dancers.

For Cassar, a longtime friend of Monaco, the opportunity to perform during National Day carries extra significance. “Of course there’s pressure—we’re playing for the Prince,” he said, noting that final rehearsals are underway and energy is running high.

Cecilia Bartoli, Director of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, initiated the project, highlighting the importance of celebrating Josephine Baker’s legacy in the city she loved. With glamour, music, and heartfelt storytelling, Welcome to Monte Carlo is set to be an unforgettable tribute.
