Monaco’s Permanent Representation to the Council of Europe hosted a prestigious reception on Tuesday, July 8 to mark the 20th anniversary of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II’s accession to the throne.

Held in the Salon Bleu of the Council of Europe, the event drew nearly 200 guests, including senior diplomats, European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) judges, Strasbourg officials, and representatives from across the Council’s member states. Among the notable attendees were the Council’s Deputy Secretary General and the President of the ECHR.

Monaco’s Ambassador, H.E. Gabriel Revel, welcomed guests and underscored the Principality’s deep and lasting ties with the Council of Europe. He recalled Monaco’s 20th anniversary of membership in the Council, celebrated in October 2024 in the presence of Prince Albert II, and thanked the assembled delegations for their support ahead of Monaco’s upcoming presidency of the Committee of Ministers.

That milestone will arrive in May 2026, when Monaco assumes the rotating presidency for the first time, taking over from Moldova and preceding Montenegro. The six-month term will see Monaco highlight key priorities, including the fight against violence against women, children’s rights, sport, and the enforcement of ECHR rulings.

Ambassador Revel also announced that Prince Albert II would return to Strasbourg next year to address the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe — a symbolic moment for Monaco’s growing role in European diplomacy.

A full programme of cultural exchanges between Monaco and Strasbourg will accompany the presidency, celebrating both cities’ shared commitment to European values and artistic collaboration.
