Classical music returned to the heart of the Prince’s Palace on Thursday evening as the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra launched its summer concert series in the main courtyard—a tradition established by Prince Rainier III in 1959…

Beneath a starry Monaco sky and surrounded by frescoed walls, the opening concert marked the beginning of a five-performance season set to enchant audiences through to August 7. His Serene Highness Prince Albert II was in attendance for this first evening, joined by an international audience of music lovers and curious visitors drawn by the unique atmosphere of this historic venue.

The concert featured conductor Lawrence Foster, former musical director of the orchestra and now a beloved emeritus figure whose relationship with the ensemble spans decades. His return was warmly received by both musicians and audience members, adding a sense of reunion and reverence to the evening. The program included Beethoven’s The Creatures of Prometheus and the Violin Concerto No. 2 by Henryk Wieniawski, with acclaimed soloist Daniel Lozakovich—recent artist-in-residence with the orchestra—delivering a performance described as both technically brilliant and emotionally resonant.

Praised for its magical setting and impeccable acoustics, the courtyard concert series remains one of Monaco’s most cherished summer traditions. In addition to its visual and historical splendour, the event offers a chance to hear world-class music in a truly regal environment. The next concert, conducted by Kazuki Yamada and featuring piano duo the Hus brothers, promises another unforgettable evening. Tickets are available through the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra’s website.
