Monaco’s National Council has renewed its call for the long-planned restructuring of the Fontvieille Shopping Centre, insisting that the current refurbishment programme should not replace a more comprehensive redevelopment of the site…
The statement comes as renovation works, valued at €4.36 million, continue at the shopping centre and are expected to run until December 2026. While welcoming the improvements, the National Council said the wider redevelopment project remains essential to provide Monaco with a modern commercial offering and an attractive public space for residents, employees, businesses and visitors.
The statement follows recent comments by Minister of State Christophe Mirmand, who said discussions with the centre’s operator had reached a final phase.
The National Council also criticised recent remarks by Philippe Clerissi, president of the Fontvieille Shopping Centre’s economic interest group (GIE), who questioned the need for the proposed €500 million restructuring after praising the ongoing refurbishment works.
National Council President Thomas Brezzo argued that Mr Clerissi had previously supported the redevelopment and suggested his current position did not reflect the views of all traders. Vice-President Corinne Bertani added that while the refurbishment was welcome, it could not replace the larger restructuring project, which she described as necessary for the Principality’s future commercial development.
