The Prince’s Government is providing significant co-financing support for Monegasque company Scorpio Ship Management S.A.M.’s participation in MARINER, a European project selected under Horizon Europe, the European Union’s flagship research and innovation programme.
Since 2022, Monaco, despite being a non-EU country, has benefited from arrangements allowing its businesses to take part in certain collaborative European projects, thanks to a co-financing mechanism established between the Principality and the European Commission.
The MARINER project brings together thirteen European partners specialising in the maritime, energy and technology sectors. Coordinated by Norwegian institute NORCE Research, the project aims to develop and validate a hydrogen-based maritime propulsion solution built around high-power fuel cells designed to meet the operational demands of ships. Its broader goal is to accelerate the energy transition of maritime transport through a technology that is reliable, competitive and free of direct emissions, with an eye toward future industrial deployment.
Within the consortium, Scorpio Ship Management S.A.M. joins as an associate partner, contributing operational expertise drawn from the management of merchant vessels, along with essential data to help assess the technical, economic and environmental performance of the solution being developed.
This marks the third Monegasque company to receive backing from the Monaco Government under a Horizon Europe project, following the Single Buoy Moorings Offshore group and MonacoTech-incubated start-up Sea Further. The new participation reflects the growing momentum behind this European funding instrument, which has become an important lever for innovation financing among the Principality’s economic players, and aligns closely with Monaco’s priorities around energy transition, greenhouse gas emission reduction and development of the blue economy.
Through this support, the Prince’s Government reaffirms its commitment to helping Monegasque businesses pursue innovative projects with strong strategic and environmental impact, while strengthening cooperation with the European Union and promoting the Principality’s expertise on the international stage.
