German international Daniel Theis has officially ended his spell with the Roca Team, paving the way for a move to fellow French club ASVEL Villeurbanne ahead of the new EuroLeague season.
The 33-year-old centre leaves Monaco after joining the Principality’s side in early 2025 following his return from the NBA. During his time with the club, Theis quickly became an important figure in the frontcourt, helping Monaco reach the EuroLeague Final before playing a key role in its 2026 Betclic Élite championship triumph.
Although his contract was due to run until 2026, Monaco confirmed that both parties had agreed to part ways this summer. The departure comes as the club continues to reshape its squad following domestic success and amid wider changes to its roster.
Theis is now expected to continue his career with ASVEL Villeurbanne, where he would become one of the marquee signings of the French club’s rebuilding project. ASVEL president Tony Parker has already described the German world champion as a major addition, highlighting both his international experience and the leadership qualities he is expected to bring to the dressing room.
A veteran of eight NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers and New Orleans Pelicans, Theis also played a pivotal role in Germany’s historic triumph at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, further enhancing his reputation as one of Europe’s most accomplished big men.
His departure marks another significant change for Monaco as preparations begin for the 2026-27 campaign, while ASVEL looks to strengthen its ambitions both domestically and in the EuroLeague.
