As News.MC previously reported, Jean-Charles Mulini was sentenced to 19 years in prison by Monaco’s Criminal Court on May 22 after being convicted of the attempted homicide of his former partner, whom he stabbed 34 times in 2022…

Now, the case has taken a new turn, with the defence filing an appeal before Monaco’s Court of Revision.

According to Monaco Matin, Mulini’s lawyer, Me Bergonzi, is seeking a review of several legal issues raised during the trial rather than a direct retrial. Among the points being challenged is the length of the defendant’s pre-trial detention. Mulini, 37, has been held since late 2022, and the defence argues that questions remain over how Monaco’s legal time limits for detention should be interpreted.

The lawyer also maintains that the rejection of a pre-trial release request may have affected the preparation of the defence and the perception of the accused during proceedings. He argues that appearing before the court as a free man could have demonstrated rehabilitation and allowed for a different presentation of the case.

Another issue reportedly raised concerns the legal interpretation of the attack itself and whether aspects of the court’s reasoning should be reconsidered.

As reported by Monaco Matin, the appeal does not automatically result in a new trial. The Court of Revision will first examine whether any legal errors occurred during the proceedings. Only if part or all of the judgment is overturned could a new trial potentially be ordered.
