A Monaco criminal court has sentenced Jean-Charles Mulini to 19 years in prison after convicting him of the attempted murder of his former partner in a case that has shocked the Principality, as reported by Monaco Matin…
The verdict was delivered on Friday evening following four days of hearings centred on the April 2022 attack inside the couple’s apartment at the Les Mandariniers residence in Monaco. The victim, identified as Fanny, survived 34 stab wounds to her neck, torso, back, legs and hands in what prosecutors described as an exceptionally violent assault.
The sentence exceeded the 18 years requested by the prosecution and came close to the maximum penalty of 20 years available under Monaco law for attempted homicide. Mulini, who has been in custody since late 2022, was also handed a 10-year restraining order and a five-year mandatory treatment order.
During the trial, prosecutors argued the attack had been planned and carried out with “ferocity,” claiming the violence was triggered by the victim’s wish to leave the relationship. Investigators revealed that Mulini had searched online for phrases including “fatal blow to the heart” and “stab wound to the throat” before the attack.
The defence rejected suggestions of premeditation and pointed to Mulini’s psychological fragility and fear of abandonment. Addressing the court before sentencing, the defendant stated: “I take full responsibility for my actions.”
The victim, described during proceedings as a “miracle survivor,” told the court she would “never be the same again” after the attack. Following three hours of deliberation, the judges and jurors returned the guilty verdict, prompting emotional scenes inside the courtroom as the victim’s family embraced after the sentence was announced.
