This week marks the 10th anniversary of Beyond Plastic Med (BeMed), an initiative launched under the leadership of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation to combat plastic pollution in the Mediterranean…
Founded in 2015 following a conference highlighting the devastating impact of plastic waste, BeMed has since grown into a key player in the fight against marine pollution, supporting over 100 projects across the Mediterranean. From decontamination efforts to waste recycling and awareness campaigns, BeMed has united governments, businesses, and civil society in a shared mission to reduce plastic waste at its source.
Over the past decade, BeMed has worked with countries like Morocco, Albania, Tunisia, and Montenegro—nations at the forefront of plastic pollution reduction efforts. Many Mediterranean countries, heavily reliant on tourism, have recognized the economic necessity of keeping their coastal waters clean. BeMed has also supported innovative projects, such as transforming plastic waste into new materials and promoting regulatory frameworks to limit pollution.
Lucile Courtial, BeMed’s executive secretary, emphasized that while awareness has significantly increased over the past ten years, plastic production continues to rise, making the challenge ever more pressing. However, she remains optimistic, noting that businesses, policymakers, and the general public are more engaged than ever in tackling the issue.
As BeMed looks to the future, its mission remains clear: mobilizing resources, sharing solutions, and driving concrete action to protect the Mediterranean for generations to come.
