The newly appointed Deputy Chairman of Monaco’s Cardio-Thoracic Centre has set out an ambitious vision to strengthen the institution’s international reputation by embracing innovation, expanding research and attracting world-class medical talent…
Speaking on Monaco Info, French-Canadian cardiac surgeon Professor Thierry Mesana said he was honoured to take on the role after a distinguished career spanning France and Canada, including 25 years at the renowned Ottawa Heart Institute. He also recalled longstanding professional links with Monaco dating back to his time leading the cardiac surgery department at La Timone Hospital in Marseille, where he worked closely with the Principality on complex heart transplant cases.
Professor Mesana praised the centre’s highly skilled teams, advanced infrastructure and excellent regional reputation, but said there was an opportunity to restore the international prominence envisioned by its founders more than four decades ago.
Innovation will be central to that strategy. He highlighted advances in minimally invasive procedures, robotic surgery and artificial intelligence, which is increasingly being used to improve diagnosis, predict patient outcomes and enhance hospital management. He also described the centre’s cardiac imaging facilities as among the most sophisticated in the world.
Professor Mesana also reaffirmed his commitment to improving women’s heart health, drawing on his experience establishing Canada’s first specialist centre dedicated to cardiovascular disease in women, where research helped address longstanding inequalities in diagnosis and treatment.
