Monaco’s delegation has arrived in Turin to compete in the 12th edition of the Special Olympics World Winter Games, an international event dedicated to athletes with intellectual disabilities…

The Games, originally scheduled for 2021, were postponed and later cancelled due to the pandemic, making this the first edition in eight years. With 105 countries participating and over 1,500 athletes competing across various winter disciplines, the event has drawn significant attention.

The Monegasque delegation is competing in three disciplines: snowshoe racing, cross-country skiing, and alpine skiing. Monaco has sent four athletes for snowshoe racing, six for alpine skiing, and one for cross-country skiing, accompanied by a team of experienced coaches. The Games emphasize both competition and inclusivity, focusing on personal achievement, sportsmanship, and the Special Olympics values of respect and perseverance.

Pierre Van Klaveren, President of Special Olympics Monaco, highlighted the importance of training and preparation, noting that consistent practice and participation in international competitions in Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Austria have helped the team refine their skills. He also emphasized that while medals are a motivating factor, the primary goal remains personal growth, camaraderie, and the experience of international competition.

The Games have already begun with preliminary rounds, known as “divisioning,” which assess athletes’ performance levels before the official finals. Monaco’s athletes will compete in their final events over the next few days, with cross-country skiing finals on Wednesday, followed by snowshoe racing and alpine skiing on Thursday. With strong preparation and a determined spirit, Monaco’s delegation is set to make the most of this prestigious international event.
