The Monaco Aeronauts Club recently embarked on an extraordinary ecological journey, flying its red and white hot air balloon over Armenia, including the historic capital, Yerevan…

This adventure not only showcased breathtaking landscapes but also highlighted Monaco’s commitment to sustainable practices in aviation.

The Monegasque balloon, designed with a double envelope to minimize heat loss, uses biogas as its primary fuel source, reducing CO2 emissions by 50 percent over the past decade. This pioneering effort demonstrates how innovative technologies can significantly lower the environmental impact of hot air ballooning. The biogas is produced from organic waste, offering an 85-95% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.

Pilots launched from multiple sites in Armenia, including Aparan and Garni, and even from the bustling city centre of Yerevan, home to 1.5 million residents. “It’s extraordinary,” shared one pilot, emphasizing the unique opportunity to demonstrate eco-friendly practices in a region rich in history and culture.

The biogas is sourced from a Monaco-based company that leads in sustainable energy solutions. While the supply of biogas is limited, its use is well-suited to Monaco’s size and environmental goals, making the Principality a model for sustainable aviation.

The Monaco Aeronauts Club continues its flights powered by biogas, aiming to spread awareness of sustainable aviation technologies and inspire others to adopt greener practices. This Armenian journey exemplifies how eco-conscious innovation can make a significant impact while promoting responsible exploration.
