Monaco’s Mareterra district, a two billion euro land reclamation project and a beacon of sustainable urban development, was officially inaugurated on Wednesday, December 4 by HSH Prince Albert II. This transformative endeavour, over a decade in the making, extends the Principality’s territory by three percent and reflects a bold vision of innovation, environmental stewardship, and modern urban living. Located in the east of Monaco, Mareterra is among the most ambitious projects of Prince Albert II’s reign, showcasing Monaco’s ability to balance progress with preservation.
During the inauguration, HSH Prince Albert II described Mareterra as a symbol of Monaco’s ambition and resilience, achieved through engineering and environmental foresight rather than force. The entirely pedestrianised eco-district offers a one-hectare park, a 750-metre seaside promenade, and cultural landmarks such as the Mediterranean Space and Princess Gabriella Square, designed to inspire reflection and harmony with nature. The district integrates 1,000 trees, energy-efficient buildings, and renewable energy systems, earning prestigious environmental certifications.

Monaco’s Minister of Public Works, the Environment and Urban Development, Céline Caron-Dagioni, emphasised Mareterra’s lasting significance. “This district will quickly become a major asset for the Principality, a renewed expression of its potential, and a new embodiment of its unique way of life,” she told gathered press on Wednesday. “In a few decades, the technical and human challenges of this project may be forgotten, but the beauty and elegance of Mareterra will remain admired. It will stand as one of the great successes of HSH Prince Albert II’s reign and a source of pride for all of us.”
Mareterra also represents an economic and cultural boon, with 110 modern apartments, 10 villas, and four elegant townhouses complementing 4,000 square metres of boutique retail and dining spaces around its marina. The district expands the Grimaldi Forum by 10,000 square metres, bolstering Monaco’s position as a global destination for business and culture.
Mareterra is a blueprint for future urban development, uniting luxury living with environmental responsibility. It is not just Monaco’s newest neighbourhood but a lasting testament to the Principality’s creativity, vision, and commitment to a sustainable and innovative future.
